S​​​​​​​​ummer School in glorious Devon is an opportunity for immersion into the work of Dr Martin Shaw. For four days we gather at an old manor house on the edge of Dartmoor to explore myth, storytelling and its relationship to both the land and our lives.

This is a rare invitation to work with a master storyteller in his native landscape. From folktales to saint stories, from fairy tales to myth, this electrifying experience will deepen your understanding of quite why story matters so profoundly in our troubled times.

Expect to learn some stories yourself and have a lasting encounter with this most ancient of technologies.

As wandering scholars, we will start the day deep in story and poetry, brooding together for the morning sessions. We will explore tales from pocket sized to epic scale.

In the afternoons, you will be equipped with a bardic task, to explore the move from seeing to beholding in both the living world and in our own innate natures. There will be one day fully on the moor. In the evenings there will be good local food, music and story. Up to 60 people together, getting cooked in the mysteries, learning of kindness, grace, grief and rapture. Just like something from the old stories.

Our summer school is a highlight of the School of Myth calendar, taking advantage of the long summer days to fully explore our relationship with the land.

A residential course in a lovely old manor house on the edge of Dartmoor, Summer School with Dr. Martin Shaw includes 4-nights accommodation, all teaching and meals (locally sourced and seasonal where possible) from supper on arrival day to an early breakfast prior to departure.

Accommodations

Manor House & Cottage

Accommodations in the manor house are mostly in shared rooms of up to six people. The budget beds are bunk beds in these shared rooms.

There are a few single rooms and a few doubles for couples and twin rooms for 2 sharing.

We also rent a cottage in the grounds (two minutes walk from the main house) for 8 people, in double, twin and single rooms. Please ask for details.

All teaching and meals from supper on arrival day to early breakfast prior to departure and 4 nights accommodation are included in fees.

All fees include VAT at 20 per cent.
